Abstract
This paper analyzes the novels by Eça de Queiroz as textual incursions to understand the Portuguese social reality. To do so, it discusses some key points of the author’s literary works, his letters and press texts, demonstrating how the criticisms directed at Portuguese society are intertwined with the uncertainties, doubts, anxieties and selections that make up the Queiroz’s aesthetic elaboration.
