Eclecticism and Rhetoric in the Brazilian philosophy: from Silvestre Pinheiro Ferreira (1769-1846) to Fray Francisco do Monte Alverne (1784-1858)

Abstract

The article deals with the eclectic philosophy of Victor Cousin and his brazilian repeaters at nineteenth century, Silvestre Pinheiro Pereira and Francisco do Monte Alverne. With Antonio Paim, Laerte Ramos de Carvalho and Maria Beatriz Nizza da Silva, this literature review highlights some philosophical issues of the famous sacred orator and priest-master, in view of role of the Catholic Church as a major vehicle for the dissemination and production of knowledge in Luso-Brazilian territory, through the process known as civilizing mission. The main objective is to study how the eclecticism was used as a rhetorical device to justify the limits, the dispersion and the shallowness of the site philosophical debate. As a result, we founded a national eloquence as the germ of a "Saquarema Time", in which the same words would serve to different politic positions.
