COMPETITIVE OPPOSITION, EXCLUSION OF CANDIDATES, AND THE COMMISSION OF VERIFICATION OF CREDENTIALS: THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CANDIDATES OF THE LIBERAL PARTY FOR THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES (PROVINCE OF PARANÁ, 1869-1877)

Abstract:

This study analyzes the performance of candidates from the Liberal Party in elections for the Chamber of Deputies of the Empire that took place in the Province of Paraná from 1869 to 1876. First, the passage of that party to the opposition in 1868 failed to completely disorganize its electoral base. In the early 1870s, the Liberal Party of Paraná had a stable performance in elections for the Chamber. Secondly, in the middle of the decade, two Liberal candidates managed to supplant the Conservative Party candidates in the race for such an institution. Third, the defeat of the conservative candidates for deputy general for Paraná motivated the intervention, in 1877, of the Commission of Verification of Credentials of Chamber. This commission excluded the liberals from Paraná, preventing them from exercising their mandates.
