FROM THE REVOLT TO THE REGATTAS: THE ROWING AND THE “RECONSTRUCTION” OF NITERÓI (1895-1904)

Abstract:

This article aims to discuss the mobilization of sport during the “reconstruction” process of Niterói between 1895 and 1904, a city that was deeply affected by the conflicts of the Revolta da Armada. We will focus on the initiatives of nautical associations, with special interest in the actions of the Grupo de Regatas Gragoatá and Clube de Regatas Icaraí. We also discuss the positions of chroniclers about these activities, their considerations about the importance of rowing. The investigated period comprises the moment in which rowing is better structured, drawing the attention of intellectuals and political leaders. Newspapers published in Niterói and the Rio de Janeiro were used as sources, notably O Fluminense, at that time one of the most influent newspapers in the state of Rio de Janeiro. We seek to cast an original view on the history of the sport, trying to understand the connection with others spheres of the context, as well as on the history of Niterói, a city that, despite its historical importance - including having been the capital of the Rio de Janeiro for decades (1835-1893 and 1903-1974) -, is little investigated.
