  • The Brazilian State and the Instability of Slave Property: the 1831 Law and the Slave Registry of 1872 Artigo

    Mamigonian, Beatriz Gallotti

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The article demonstrates that the slave registry instituted by the Free Womb Law (September 28, 1871) was intended to legalize the property over the Africans who were brought through the illegal slave trade and who should be considered free according to the abolition law of November 7, 1831. Despite the fact that successive governments guaranteed slave property and that it served as legal in commercial transactions, the fears demonstrated by slaveowners in petitions and the arguments presented in the debate of the Free Womb bill in 1871 indicate that property over the Africans imported since 1831 was considered unstable. The work is based on Brazilian parliamentary debates, legislation, State Council proceedings and decisions and political literature.
  • The Order of Historical Time: The Longue Durée and Micro-History Artigo

    Tomich, Dale

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article is concerned with Fernand Braudel's conception of the plural temporality and, above all, the longue durée as a practical tool for historical inquiry. Through an examination of the work of Braudel's colleague Ernst Labrousse, it emphasizes the theoretical and methodological assumptions underlying the practice of serial history as the means to reconstruct such "structural temporalities." Finally, it treats the concern for the episodic and short-term that characterizes Italian microhistória as a reaction to the dominance of French serial history which, nonetheless remains in relation to Braudel's conception of plural time. In this way the article seeks to make explicit the relationship between the socalled "second Annales" of Braudel and Italian microhistory and to suggest ways the conceptions of temporality might promote dialogue between diverse historiographical approaches.

  • Class Party and State Party: Comparing Republicanism in São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, 1873-1930 Artigo

Sêga, Rafael Augustus; Perissinotto, Renato Monseff

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article compares the "political instruments" used by São Paulo's high bureaucracy to impose its tax and coffee policies on "coffee capital" with the "political instruments" used by Rio Grande do Sul's new urban petite bourgeoisie to impose a political reorganization of the State apparatus inspired by the "scientific" positivism and against the interests of the ranching elites who had hitherto dominated the state.
  • Black Princes in White Parties: Power, Rebellion and Slave Identities in the 18 th century Minas Gerais Artigo

    Dias, Renato da Silva

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article aims to show the appropriation of religious parties by slaves in the eighteenth-century Minas Gerais from a case study: the attempt of slave rebellion in 1719. We also want to discuss the construction of black identities in this captaincy, highlighting the battle between two logics, the "ethnic" brought by enslaved Africans, and the "colonial" which incorporates multiple identities. In the organization of this rebellion these two logics were present, and the impasse created when choosing the rebellion leader resulted in its dismantling. Far from serving as a mechanism of social control, religion was reinterpreted by the captives as a way to reconstruct their identities, to protect themselves and reaffirm their rights. Similarly, the parties were convenient to organize rebellions.
  • The "Elections of the Truncheon" and the Problem of Electoral Manipulation in the Brazilian Monarchy Artigo

    Saba, Roberto N. P. F.

    Abstract in English:

Abstract For a long time historians have studied elections in the Brazilian Empire through the analysis of the corrupt practices carried out by the central government or the local potentates, who manipulated the polls and perverted the free choice of voters and electors. Recent works, however, are reconsidering this topic, going beyond the exposition of corrupt practices and searching for the significance of the electoral process for the historical agents involved in it. The present article aims to contribute to this recent debate through the analysis of the infamous "eleições do cacete", which happened in 1840. By analyzing petitions sent to the Chamber of Deputies by citizens who claimed to be victims of the government's truculence, it is possible to understand how denouncing electoral manipulation was part of the nineteenth-century political juggling. These petitions elucidate how citizens of the Empire were capable of understanding the representative government under which they lived and how the contemporary political leaders made use of petitioning to conduct their disputes.
