Convulsoterapia pela acetilcolina: Estudo clínico e experimental do choque vascular

The A. emphasizes the importance of Fiamberti's method of treatment of the mental diseases. He focalises the gross vasomotor disturbances seen in psychosis. He considers that acetilcholin must be quickly intravenously injected using crescent doses; the convulsive dose was reached without any inconvenient. It produces the vascular shock by intense vasodilatation, improving the vasomotor symptoms and consequently the mental diseases. He made experimental works, in which it was observed the mechanism of action of the acetilcholin, in large doses, inoculated in the vein of the dog, and the influence of the drug on the arterial tension, respiration and vasomotricity. The convulsive therapy by acetilcholin was employed in six cases of schyzopnrenia and in 2 of "post partum" psychosis. The technic of application is similar to the common methods. Initially the dose was of 0,10 gr. and it was increased each time 0,05 gr. until convulsions were produced. Whatever the dose may be, acetilcholin is always diluted in 2 cc. of bi-destilated water. The number of injections for an entire treatment varies from 10 to 30, applied 3 times a week. The results were : 2 total remissions in schyzophrenia and 2 total remissions in the cases of "post partum" psychosis. From other 4 schyzophrenic patients, one had clinical improvement but the other 3 have remained unchanged.
