Adherence to psychopharmacological treatment

To identify the main factors related to psychiatric patients' adherence to psychopharmacological treatment. A database search was conducted in Medline and Pubmed using the following keywords: adherence, antipsychotic medication, and mental illness. Among the retrieved publications, 52 articles were used to conduct the study. The majority of the publications (73 %) aimed to identify factors that may influence the adherence to psychopharmacological treatments. The remainder of the publications (27%) aimed to assess the effectiveness of mental health professional interventions in promoting psychopharmacological adherence. The main factors related to psychopharmacological adherence are inherent to the patient, medication type, and social factors. The most effective interventions used by mental health professionals were those combining educational and behavior change approaches.
