Aracy Amaral: A critical view in Search of a national identity in visual arts - 1963/1974

ABSTRACT

This article addresses the issue of Brazilian culture and national identity in Visual Arts through the texts of art critic Aracy Amaral published between 1963 and 1974. Therefore, it resorts to the direct analysis of Amaral’s main texts, as well as complementary historiographic bibliography. Marshall Berman's notion of the "Faustian split" is evoked as an analogy to recurrent themes on Amaral's production, such as Brazil's belatedness regarding cultural e economic fields and the quest for a national identity. We intend to understand how Aracy Amaral’s critical discourse problematized the relationships between national identity and cultural and artistic interferences in Visual Arts, which also culminates in the intent to understand the idea of Brazilian cultural identity present in her critical work.
