THEIR SPACE: THE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN THE PANORAMAS' EXHIBITIONS OF MUSEU DE ARTE MODERNA DE SÃO PAULO DEDICATED TO THREE-DIMENSIONAL WORKS (1972-1991)

Abstract

From a feminist perspective, the article investigates the presence of women artists in the editions of Panorama de Arte Atual Brasileira (a program of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo) dedicated to the three-dimensional field, held between 1972 and 1991. The objective is to verify how the juxtaposition of these two indicators produces a gendered obliteration field, rarely addressed by historiography. Based on a broad quantitative diagnosis of their participation in relation to men’s, comparisons were made by generations and levels of legitimacy, seeking to understand the socio-structural reasons for the gender imbalances within the art system during the 1970s and 1980s. Alongside this, the group of selected works was analyzed in order to identify certain recurrences and singularities and how they were absorbed by the art system.
