JUDITH SCOTT: THE TEXTILE OF BECOMING

ABSTRACT

This paper approaches spinning as becoming in the works of Judith Scott (1943-2005), an illiterate trisomic artist incapable of verbal language. The intent is to examine the intuitive nature and the temporality - the formativity prioritizes the process over the product. The temporality will be approached from the Bergsonian philosophy. Frequently, innate expressions are smothered by theoretical knowledge, by “very possessed ideas”, in Merleau-Ponty terms. Thus, deducing randomness is a mistake, guided by generality. Considering the originality of research on this American artist in Brazil, this reflection contributes to the diversity of perspectives on artistic processes and to the consolidation of critical fortune, in addition to providing a discussion on the possibility of considering art from a phenomenological perspective.
