FROM DOCUMENTAL TO ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY

ABSTRACT

This article seeks to contribute to contemporary studies on visuality by specific focusing on contemporary photography and its relationship with society, especially in the creation and maintenance of regimes of truth and power, which are transmuting the concept of truth in present time. It addresses the frictions between documentary and artistic photography and how these issues intertwine with the notion of real and fictional, documentary and artistic to understand the boundaries and transgressions of contemporary photography. The cases of Steve McCurry, Andreas Gursky, and the incorporation of images from the Media Ninja collective by the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM SP) are addressed as examples.
