Abstract
The text backtracks to the origins of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), placing the Institutional Self-Assessment at all stages of institutional development. To this end, it reveals the concern of Senior Management in the early stages of operation of the institution, in giving voice to the internal community. It highlights along its historical path, how various procedures and studies have focused on specific institutional features that impact on the quality of university activities, as well as on the training of students. It reveals the creation of sectors responsible for implementing these studies, as well as commissions, based on epistemological, methodological and theoretical principles, which have conducted the Institutional Self-Assessment during the almost 60 years of existence of the UFC.
