Tia Coló na sua barraca (nº 33 e 34) no setor das ervas da feira do Ver-o-Peso. Lá, são as mulheres que predominam. Negras, sábias, ligadas a orixás, convidam gentil e calorosamente você que está passando a se aproximar, e estabelecem uma doce conversação. Do que você precisa? Vendem garrafas e vidrinhos contendo poções, banhos e perfumes. Dão conselhos. Você pode sentar em um banquinho e realizar uma consulta. Chora nos meus pés, chega-te a mim, chama dinheiro, afasta-te de mim, hei de vencer, vence tudo, queira ou não queira tem que me querer... Basta ter fé. O dinheiro é quase um coadjuvante nesse mercado de bens espirituais. As erveiras do Ver-o-Peso são um patrimônio de Belém. Elas cultivam tradições indígenas e afro-brasileiras, que se entrelaçam nos banhos de cheiro, nos remédios preparados com a flora amazônica da tradição indígena, fortalecidos pela fé católica e umbandista. “Eu sou aquela pessoa sempre alegre, sempre carinhosa... eu me sinto bem quando as pessoas venham com problema e chegam aqui e diz que já resolveu. Então isso eu me sinto muito orgulhosa. E eu não sei nem como agradecer. Primeiro a que? A Deus e nossos orixás. É aonde na minha barraquinha tem um que é meu pai Ogum, é meu São Jorge Guerreiro. [...] Final de ano é a nossa festa, que é o dia do banho cheiroso [...] Eu sou católica, tenho bastante fé em Deus e na minha Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, aonde eu já recebi muitas graça, e sou também umbandista, eu adoro a minha umbanda. Então aqui a gente vai fazer os nossos banhos [...] porque pra mim fazer um banho desses eu tenho que tá concentrada, pedindo, implorando, porque aquelas pessoas que vêm em busca da saúde, do emprego, que alcancem [...] na festa de Iemanjá [...] eu vou pra beira da maré, pedindo permissão ao nosso pai Oxalá, minha mãe das água, então é uma coisa muito importante, é uma coisa muito importante você ter a fé, se eu não tiver a fé não adianta nada, porque é a fé que derruba qualquer montanha”. Um homem carregando uma rasa de açaí. Quantas rasas ele carrega todo dia? Esse açaí vem do quilombo da ilha do Maracujá? O Porto da Palha é uma porta de entrada para o continente. A prefeitura quer transformá-la em mais uma ‘janela para o rio’. Os feirantes e usuários negociam com a prefeitura em torno de projetos que caem de cima sobre eles. Homem exerce seu ofício de amarrador de sacas de açaí. As fotografias do Porto da Palha mostram pessoas nos seus diversos ofícios. Elas ocupam diariamente esse espaço público que existe para vender e comprar, mas elas vêm não apenas para realizar operações de compra e venda; embora essa seja a principal motivação, ocorrem nessas feiras outros tipos de troca. O comércio se dá dentro de um universo relacional próprio. Comprando e vendendo, as pessoas estabelecem relações, vínculos de clientela. Amarram-se umas às outras mediante fiados, forras e outras instituições típicas. O comércio se dá dentro de instituições, regras tácitas, que são parte da identidade desses lugares. Homem desembarca no Porto da Palha, carregando paneiros de açaí e uma mochila, que provavelmente ele traz para alguém que o espera. No porto, as pessoas se encontram. A fotografia foi tirada do trapiche, que balança e tem tábuas soltas, e não possui um sanitário decente. O chão onde o negro pisa foi aterrado com caroços de açaí e resíduos de madeira. Foram eles mesmos que fizeram o trabalho. O espaço popular é abandonado pelo poder público. A foto mostra esse abandono. Por que o poder público despreza tanto os lugares populares? Vistos pela prefeitura como lugares desordenados, sem a modernidade exigida para colocar Belém no circuito internacional do turismo, os portos da Palha e do Açaí são feiras populares onde os habitantes do outro lado do rio vendem açaí e palha, mas também carvão, farinha, verduras e frutas regionais. Eles abastecem a cidade e movimentam as próprias feiras, mas a prefeitura não investe nessa genuína vida popular. Os portos poderiam ser melhorados, mantendo-se sua autenticidade. Um viajante interessado na vida genuína dos lugares certamente daria valor a esta paisagem tão própria de Belém. Contudo, o que se projeta é uma paisagem artificial, dentro da lógica do culturalismo de mercado, que representa uma paisagem amazônica para o turista convencional ver. Os usuários dos portos também fazem nas imediações seu consumo básico de gêneros alimentícios, roupas e gás de cozinha, entre outros, uma vez que nesses lugares se encontra de tudo um pouco, inclusive em termos de serviços populares. Portos públicos, os trapiches são portas abertas para quem vem navegando de ilhas e interiores e desembarca na capital para comprar e vender mercadorias, frequentar colégios, encontrar familiares e trocar conversas. Não é apenas para comprar e vender que eles vêm ao continente. Eles vêm aos portos também porque nos trapiches, nas barracas e nas imediações desdobram-se possibilidades, vida social, trabalhos. Negócio fechado entre o apanhador de açaí e o maquineiro. O açaí que chega nos portos públicos alimenta centenas de pontos de venda nos bairros do Jurunas, da Condor, do Guamá e da Cremação. O comércio se desenvolve em quantidade, milhares de quilos de açaí, farinha e outros produtos. Diariamente, em ajuda mútua, amizade, compadrio, reconhecimento. Conhecem-se pelo nome. Brincam, caçoam uns dos outros, gritam com entusiasmo. Vida não falta nesses lugares. Entre todos os termos utilizados para se referir à gentrificação, o mais contraditório é o da revitalização. Feira do Açaí, situada ao pé do Forte do Presépio, de onde a foto foi tirada. Para a feira e os portos, os homens vêm aos milhares desde muito cedo, quando o dia ainda não clareou, das ilhas do outro lado do rio Guamá e da baía do Guajará, e de outros municípios, como Acará, Bujaru, Salvaterra, Ponta de Pedras e São Domingos do Capim. Pelas águas, em embarcações de madeira e canoas com rabeta, elas trazem principalmente açaí e farinha, em milhares de quilos. Abastecem a cidade com esses gêneros essenciais na mesa típica de Belém.
