Ceramic technologies on the upper Madeira River: summary, timeline, and perspectives

Abstract

The characteristic choices of clay types, production techniques, shaping, finishes, firing, and use marks in the chains of production and use for ceramic artefacts indicate the presence of at least five distinct technological groups in the upper Madeira River region from about 3,000 BP to the eighteenth century. This article summarizes the technological variations in order to reflect on classifications, recognition of local and regional traditions, continuities and changes in the archaeological groups and contexts. This information make it possible to describe cultural transformations as well as persistence among the people who produced these ceramics during the long span of occupation in this region.
