PREFACE

Sidi Facundes; Ana Vilacy Galucio; Nilson Gabas Jr.

This publication includes most of the papers presented at the session on Strategies of Relativization in Indigenous Languages of Brazil, as part of the International Congress of the Brazilian Association of Linguistics (ABRALIN), which took place at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, March 13-15, 2003. We have also included a paper (by invitation) authored by Pilar Valenzuela on Shipibo-Konibo, a language of Peru. At the ABRALIN session, papers were presented by Alzerinda Braga, Ana Vilacy Galúcio, Carmen Lúcia R. Rodrigues, Denny Moore, Eduardo Ribeiro, Hein van der Voort, Luciana Storto, Nilson Gabas Jr., Sérgio Meira, and Sidi Facundes. Out of these, only the papers by Storto, by Braga and by Gabas Jr. are not included here. The presentations covered languages of all major linguistic families of Brazil (Arawak, Karib, Jê and Tupí). With the addition of Pilar's paper, the Pano family is also represented. The original idea was to bring together linguists working on various languages of Brazil to present advanced analyses of the strategies used in those languages to express functions resembling those of relative clauses. All linguists are specialists on the languages for which the analyses are provided and have had direct access to speakers of those languages. By means of this publication we hope to contribute to the knowledge of relative clauses in indigenous languages and their relevance for theoretical and typological linguistics. We also hope to stimulate more work on specific topics in the grammar of such languages, so as to increase the quality and quantity of advanced descriptions of the native languages of Lowland South America. We would like to thank Tom Givón, one of the major specialists on relative clauses (among many other language domains) for agreeing to read all the papers and write the introduction for this publication.
