Abstract This article addresses historical processes that brought fundamental changes to the indigenous people of the Corumbiara-Apediá region, in the south of the state of Rondônia, focusing on the Aikanã and their neighbours, Salamãi, Kwazá and Kanoé. By examining historical and anthropological documentation alongside Aikanã memory, it highlights the impact of the invasion of traditional occupation territories and the resulting population displacement due to the rubber economy and, later agribusiness. The period covered ranges from the earliest records of the Aikanã and neighbouring peoples, in the begining of the 20th century to the mid-1960s and 1970s, when infrastructure projects and the sale of federal lands began, prompting the Aikanã to settle in what is now their indigenous territory. Through a critical reading of the available sources, the article emphasizes the stories of various individuals mentioned in Aikanã memory, or by travellers and scientists who visited the area. This paper is a contribution to the still incomplete literature on the Corumbiara-Apediá region, which continues to be under immense social and ecological pressure.

Abstract The objective of this article was to present and discuss data on the study of zoomorphic representations in sites with rock art records in the State of São Paulo. Known for its archaeological research on shell mounds and lithic materials, the state of São Paulo has few works on rock paintings and engravings. In recent years, however, there has been an increase in the number of discoveries and research based on sites with rock art records. To identify similarities and graphic differences between zoomorphic, the present research started from the analysis of the technique, theme, and scenography of the rock panels of all 55 sites identified in the state. The results highlight a small number of these representations, in painted and engraved scenarios, with only 22 figures, highlighted in 9 places. They are morphologically identified as deer, birds, reptiles, and crustaceans, characterized by isolated graphic realizations in panels, marked by non-figurative representations. The animals depicted stand out for their lack of dynamism and scarce anatomical detail. The figures have a marked hermetic character.

Abstract In this article, we investigate the work of Bertha Lutz as a herpetologist. More specifically, we analyze her descriptions of anuran amphibians found in Brazilian territory. The main objective of this work is to discuss the practical dimension of scientific knowledge in Brazilian herpetology in the mid-20th century. We approach this discussion through the study of the diversity of investigation methods, classification and understanding, employed by Lutz in her work with anurans, focusing on her observations regarding the vocalization of these animals. Her descriptions and classifications, in contrast to the existing knowledge in the context of her work, led us to a debate about the nature of her scientific practices. Finally, we aim to reflect upon the ideas of ‘strong objectivity’ and ‘interagency’, which relate to the activities and roles that Bertha Lutz occupied, as a woman, feminist activist and scientist engaged with the lives of other animals.

Abstract This brief paper proposes a Cariban etymology for the Wajãpi (Tupi-Guarani) verb -kasi ‘be strong’, which has been incorrectly suggested as being of Tupi-Guarani provenance. It is proposed that the source language for this diffusion event was Apalai, and not Wayana, as is usually claimed when the issue of the Cariban influx into Wajãpi is addressed. Two other Cariban loans are discussed, pipi ‘father’s sister’ and kasuru ‘pearl’, and in these cases as well, it is shown that diffusion from Apalai, not Wayana, is the more likely scenario. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract The article undertakes an ethnographic approach between the water spirits and fish people as narrated in stories told by the Baré and Tukano, respectively, two large groups of indigenous peoples located along the Negro and Uaupés Rivers. We explore accounts of the appearances and manifestations of these water inhabitants within human communities and their significant participation in the social life of these peoples, mapping their influences on community formation, kinship relations, and the constitution of personhood. The convergence between the two cases is evident, and their integrated treatment will allow us to outline some singularities that characterize the relationship between humans and non-humans in the Northwestern Amazon region.

Conhecimentos indígenas e colaboração intercultural no rio Tiquié, noroeste amazônico Cabalzar, Aloisio

Abstract The production of knowledge in local communities on the upper Negro River, Northwest Amazon, is the focus of this article, especially that which emerges from confronting contemporary challenges, such as the effects of climate change and the pandemic. Drawing on my long experience with indigenous knowledge-holders and researchers from this region, within the scope of partnerships between the Instituto Socioambiental and indigenous organizations and communities, I aim to briefly describe collaborative research processes in terms of their practices and results. The underlying question is how different knowledge regimes intertwine their practices in local contexts of tension and risk, characteristic of the Anthropocene, and their political ramifications across various scales.

Abstract This investigation aims to highlight how indigenous labor was exploited in the spatial transformation of the colonial village of Barcelos, on the Middle Rio Negro, during the second half of the 18th century. Through the examination of documents of that era, such as correspondence, royal letters, printed sources and iconographic material, we will address the participation of indigenous people in the intensive efforts to revitalize the village in two parts. Initially, between 1755 and 1760, we will focus on discussing how indigenous labor was mobilized for the construction of buildings dedicated to the colonial administration and the military sector involved in border demarcations. Thereafter, we will reflect on the hypothesis regarding the arrival of the Spanish in Barcelos during the political crisis that worsened from 1759 onward. Both factors were responsible for the intensification of the exploitation of the indigenous people. In this way, it will be possible to ascertain their role in turning the “gear” of Barcelos’ urbanization. During this period, and amid the ensuing crises, the Lusitanian administration was entirely dependent on the workforce of the native peoples of the Rio Negro for the construction of the first landmarks in the territory.

Abstract The aim of the article is to develop an ethnographic reflection on the meanings of 'civilization' and 'the time of old' among the Yuhupdeh, an indigenous people of the Upper Rio Negro, based on their relationships with 'myth-history' in the Northwestern Amazon. The condition of being 'civilized' appears in Yuhupdeh discourse as a way to describe the set of changes in relation to the 'the time of the old,' when their ancestors lived in small groups with intense mobility throughout the forest, hunting, and gathering wild fruits. On the other hand, 'the time of the old' also refers to mythical narratives that incorporate the arrival of white people into the set of transformations that defined the order of things in the present, establishing differences between whites and indigenous peoples. In this sense, history and myth are not characterized as separate and exclusive domains, but as different ways of elaborating and making sense of the arrival of whites, interpenetrating in the expressive and symbolic regimes of indigenous collectives of the Northwestern Amazon: their myth-history. Instead of a process of acculturation or culture loss, 'civilization' seems to function as a 'self-concept' of the indigenous political condition in the face of intensified contact with the world of whites, not only revealing historical consciousness of the violent colonial process but also enabling different future projects.

Abstract By highlighting the trajectories of some leaders from the organized indigenous movement in the Upper Rio Negro as pivotal points of historical and ethnographic information, this article primarily reflects on two aspects. On one hand, it examines the different aspects of the local and ethnographic conception of leadership – a term with multiple and variable meanings over time, encompassing both belonging to ethnicities, clans or families, territorial areas, as well as education, skills to deal with bureaucracies, languages and government and/or third sector agents, among others. The second aspect regards a certain generational transition that the indigenous movement in the Upper Rio Negro has been going through. Thus, this is a contribution to the description of this social role, which reiterates, diverges from, and creates discourses and institutional arrangements based on political positions in the region such as captain, tuxaua, elder brother and shaman alongside organized civil society in support of indigenous and environmental rights. The analysis seeks to understand the relationships between individual trajectories (leaderships) and collective ones (associations and other political spaces). To achieve this, it draws on conversations, interviews and texts from the leaders; institutional documents and observation of FOIRN’s activities and part of the ethnological and ethnographic literature on the region.

Abstract The extremely high diversity of cultivated plants observed among the indigenous peoples of the Northwestern Amazon aligns with the concept of a living collection. Cuttings, seeds and seedlings are living mobile goods that circulate throughout the whole region, constantly reshaping agrobiological diversity at household scale. The diversity observed, particularly that of cassava, as well as the methods of management, fit into the notion that their spatial and temporal trajectories are known and they consist of documented plants with their characteristics and names, which are fundamental attributes of cultivated plants. These plants are presented and enacted in specialized spaces: the fields. Certain varieties are anchored in narratives about the origins of cultivated plants. However, points of rupture arise between the diversity described in ancestral narratives and contemporary practices, prompting us to question the role of diversity throughout regional history. Is the accumulation of diversity, the collection, a relatively recent phenomenon related to colonization? In conclusion, we emphasize that in a period of significant socio-ecological instability, new interpretive frameworks for biological diversity created and managed by indigenous peoples are necessary—ones that do not limit understanding to the hegemonic notion of genetic resources and ensure its continuity.
