EDITORIAL NOTE

Volume 25, number 1-2 2006 of Limnetica - Revista de La Asociacion Española de Limnologia - "The Ecology of Iberian Inland Waters:homage to Ramon Margalef" publishes 39 papers that encompass a wide range of subjects in Aquatic Sciences. This edition of Limnetica is an outstanding contribution to Limnology, Aquatic Biology, Freshwater Management and describes the ecology and biology of a great number of aquatic ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula. The quality of the papers and wide range of subjects are a relevant contribution and homage to one of the most influential and enlightened scientists of the XX century, Professor Ramon Margalef who died in 2004 in Barcelona at the age of 85. Professor Margalef had a great interest in neotropical biology and Ecology and since we first met in 1967 in Mexico City I was taken by his wisdom and knowledge.

Margalef´s influence in research in tropical ecology and biology was significant, especially in all countries in South America. His definition of the large internal de deltas and the floodplain such as "active centers of evolution" is a basis for today's many conservation projects and research programs.

In 1978, in São Carlos, São Paulo State, Brazil we set up a project called "Typology of reservoirs of São Paulo State" based on Prof. Ramon Margalef´s project on "Typology of reservoirs in Spain". This project had an important influence in Brazilian limnology and stimulated a generation of young limnologists to develop this Science further in Brazil.

Prof. Ramon Margalef visited Brazil many times and all of us, who had the privilege to attend his conferences or to discuss research problems, were profoundly influenced by him.

Ramon Margalef was an exceptional human being, always ready to help, to analyse problems, giving several key ideas in a vast range of subjects. His encyclopedic knowledge of ecology, biology, his views of complexity and ecological dynamics of communities and ecosystems was stimulating, creative and always original. He was a teacher and a researcher (Armengol, 2006) but also a philosopher of the highest quality, a fine, and unique naturalist. We dedicate this number of the Brazilian Journal of Biology to Prof. Ramon Margalef.
