Mathematics in Primary School: when National is International, France and Brazil (1880–1960)

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to analyze the mathematics of French and Brazilian primary schools in the period of 1880 to 1960. It uses a theoretical and comparative perspective that could be called international history, arising from recent studies done by researcher D. Matasci. The study mobilizes, as sources of research, mainly official documentation related to Education in Brazil; and, in the French case, results of research coming from this type of material. The study results show that the primary school mathematics course in both countries are appropriation of international intellectual exchanges that took place at conferences, missions and a number of activities that put in comparison models circulating internationally and are brought to guide national proposals.
