This paper is a theoretical essay which aims to present, based on a literature review on Mathematical Modeling, how some trends on Education and Mathematics Education are approached in academic research. It also underlines some of the main theoretical principles discussed in the literature such as Critical Mathematics Education, Interest, Interdisciplinary, and Contextualization. An overview of the research on Modeling conducted in Brazil related to other educational trends is outlined. Some of the main theoretical references approached by most of the authors are also presented. Some perspectives for future research are pointed out, as well as the need for a continuous theoretical debate concerning these themes.
