Problematizing the Enunciation of Mathematical Modeling Discourse

Abstract

The main purpose of this work is questioning some statements that are common among teachers of Basic Education in Public schools in the State of Santa Catarina insofar as these statements constitute the discourse of Mathematical Modeling in School Mathematics Education. The research material generated for the discussion in our analyses was developed with an initial questionnaire, consisting of several questions that supported a subsequent and ampler investigation. Specifically in this article, we analyze responses to one of the questions, namely: “In a few lines write down what do you understand by the expression Mathematical Modeling?” To undertake this analysis, we used theoretical tools originating in the Michel Foucault workshop. The results showed us that the applicant's statements have resonance in other discourses, and that they are not exclusive to Mathematical Modeling's own interiority.
