Open-access The State of Knowledge on the relationship of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP) with the teaching of Mathematics in theses and dissertations from 2008 to 2021

Abstract

This paper is the result of a research that aimed at analyzing the productions of master's and doctoral degrees accomplished from 2008 to 2021, which presented investigations related to the importance of the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP) in Mathematics teaching. It is a bibliographic research of a qualitative approach with an exploratory character in the State of Knowledge type. For the data collection, we used the Catalogs of Theses and Dissertations from the Coordination for Improvement of Higher Education (CAPES) and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, both available on electronic platforms. The corpus of the survey is composed of a selection of 135 dissertations and five theses. The systematic study of the general characteristics of the productions was developed based on seven categories established a posteriori. Amongst the results, it was verified that most of the productions are concentrated in the Professional Master in Mathematics in National Schools Program (PROFMAT), with prevailing works focused on the presentation of didactic-methodological teaching strategies, a typical characteristic of professional masters. On the other hand, there is a lack of investigations having OBMEP as the main object, as well as research with deeper reflections on its impacts on the teaching and learning of the Mathematics process, especially regarding the goal of social inclusion in the Olympiad.
