In this paper, we present the process of developing a set of educational tasks involving area and perimeter of plane geometric figures, carried out as part of the Professional Masters degree program in Mathematics Education. Our goal was to create a series of theoretically-based tasks that allowed us to identify difficulties faced by students when studying the topics area and perimeter, raising possibilities for intervening in the process of learning geometric themes by 7th and 8th grade students. In our research, we adopted the Model of Semantic Fields as the theoretical-epistemological basis and as an instrument for reading students' production of meanings. In addition, we present a brief review of the literature on geometric measures and learning difficulties related to area and perimeter. Finally we discuss the characteristics of the educational tasks we developed, chosen based on our approach to educational material.
