Resistance of soybean to insects: I. Performance of lines and cultivars in relation to Epinotia aporema (Wals.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

During the seasons of 1980/81 and 1981/82, under field conditions, eight soybean lines (D 72-9601-1, IAC 73-228, IAC 77-3802, IAC 77-3823, IAC 78-2296, IAC 78-2318, IAC78-3258 and IAC 78-3278) and two cultivars (Santa-Rosa and TMU) were studied in relation to the attack of Epinotia aporema. In both seasons, the experiments were set up in randomized complete block design. The E. aporema infestation in the experiments was natural and the evaluations of the attack as percentage of bored buds was made 50 days after planting. The infestation in 1981/82 was significantly higher than in 1980/81. However, no interaction was verified between genotypes and year. Considering the average of the two evaluations, it was verified that the lines IAC 78-23/8 and 78-3278 were the least attacked while the cultivars Santa-Rosa and TMU and the line IAC 77-3802 were the genotypes most damaged by E. aporema.
