SUMMARY

Castor bean plants of the variety IA-38 (the most planted in the state of São Paula) were found to be heavily attacked by the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. This seems to be the first record ot the occurrence of a gall-forming nematode on this host plant in Brazil.

The affected castor bean plants were stunted, show ed leaf drop, and presented symptoms similar to those of nitrogen deficiency. The yield was also reduced. The plant roots had small to medium sized galls, as well as cortical cracks. The main root had a peculiar rough aspect.
