Observations on rooting softwood cuttings of olive (Olea europaea L.)

José Botter Bernardi; Romeu Inforzato

SUMMARY

Softwood cuttings of Olea europaea sylvestris L. planted in boxes filled with fine sand and sphagnum moss, kept in the greenhouse and individually protected by glass bells, resulted in up to 100% rooting.

Groups of 100 softwood cuttings, taken from a hard-rooting but unknown variety of olive (Olea europaea L.) were treated with six different types of plant hormones; two similar groups of untreated cuttings were used as controls, one for liquid and the other for powder. Rooting was carried out in boxes covered with glass- frames, filled with fine sand and sphagnum moss and kept in the greenhouse.

Considering only the percentage of rooted cuttings, the best results were as follows: untreated control group for liquids (46%), Seradix-B n.°1 powder (45%) and Seradix-A (liquid) (43%). Nevertheless the best results regarding development and quantity of roots were obtained with the hormones alpha-naphtil-acetic acid and Seradix-B n.° 2 powder.
