Comparative morphology of rugouse and smooth leaf plant of drybean

A rugouse and deep green leaf plant of drybean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., 'Goiano Precoce', was identified in a seed production area at the Experimental Station of Ribeirão Preto, Instituto Agronômico, State of São Paulo, Brazil, during the growing season of 1986. Comparative anatomic studies between the typical leaves and the rugouse ones were undertaken. Rugouse leaves have higher number of trichomes and stomata, plus irregular and smaller epidermic cells than the normal ones. Rugouse leaves also showed a compact mesophyll with small intercellular spaces and a thickier leaf blade.
