SUMMARY
Survival of R. phaseoli strains SMS-371 (=127 K-17, Nitragin Co. (USA) and SMS-376 (=CIAT-157, original CC-511) on peat was checked over a period of 240-250 days storage in the refrigerator.
The peat sample had been ground, limed (10% lime; final pH=7.0) and dried (80°C) for commercial use.
Both strains were cultivated on yeast manitol liquid media (pH=6.8) and mixed with the peat, when numbers of rhizobia were greater than 109 cells/ml, by direct counting.
Inoculant moisture was around 33%. Five plate counts were made in duplicate, during the storage period. In both strains a decrease in cell number was observed, in the 4th counting date (215-222 days storage), but even so rhizobia population was greater than 1.2 x 108 at the final sampling.
