Detailed-reconnaissance soil survey of Atibaia county, SP

This paper presents the soil survey of Atibaia, a county located North of São Paulo city, between the latitudes 46°25' and 46°45" S and longitudes 23°00' and 23°15' W Greenwich and covering an area of 478 km². A general description of the area, with considerations about geology, topgraphy, climate and vegetation is presented. A schematic map of the lithological formation was elaborated on the basis of a geological reconnaissance survey. The soil survey was carried out at a detailed-reconnaissance level, by means of a topographic map and aerial photographs of 1:25,000 scale. The soil map was elaborated o na 1:50,000 scale. The soil units were classified according to the American classification of 1938/49, according to the Brazilian Soil Commission classification and also according to the U.S.D.A. classification - 7th. approximation. The identification soil legend consists of 11 mapping units, nine being single units and two soil complexes. The single units were grouped into orders, according to the 7th approximation, as follows: Oxisol, two units; Ultisol, five units; and, Inceptisol, two units. A general description of the soil mapping units is presented along with a detailed description of their representative profiles. An interpretation of the relationship between the soil units and the geomorphological and geological aspects of the landscape is given. A final consideration about the land use is also presented.
