SUMMARY

An experiment was performed at Campinas, State of São Paulo, to select grafting methods for loquat tree (Eriobotrya Japonica Lindley) propagation.

The following conclusions were reached:

a) Whip grafting done at the top of the stock in which the main leaves were left below the graft showed the best results as for take percentage and scion development. These rootstock leaves are important to help the tree growing until starts its growth. Under lath house conditions graft protection with plastic bags or wax to prevent drying out or sunburn was practically dispensable.

b) Budding was successful only when the tops of the stocks were cut off subse-quently to force the bud into growth. The procedure of bending down the top of the rootstock broken partially just above the shield or patch was of little value to force the bud to start to grow.
