Sweet cassava variety trials in São Paulo State, Brazil

Sweet cassava variety trials were carried out at three different locations in São Paulo State, Brazil, under a randomized design with 6 treatments (varieties) and 4 replications. Plants grown in Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo, Presidente Epitácio and Araçatuba regions, during the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons, were harvested 9 to 12 months after planting and evaluated for root yield and cooking time. There were genotype-environment interactions for yield (year and region) and cooking time (region). The IAC 576-70 variety presented the highest average yield (29.9 t/ha) compared to the other varieties, and similar yield compared to IAC Mantiqueira variety (26.1 t/ha). In relation to cooking time the IAC 576-70 variety was superior to the other varieties, and was similar to the IAC Jaçanã and IAC 14-18 varieties. The results also indicated that the roots grown in higher fertility soils presented lower cooking time.
