Occupational therapy and biopsychosocial model: tensions from an existential understanding of an occupational human being

Abstract

In this article, we address the relevance of considering Occupational Therapy, specifically from an existential understanding of an occupational human being, under the principles of the Biopsychosocial Model. We discuss the idea of occupation, understood as the phenomenal structure that allows the existence of the human being in the world, not complementary with a fragmentary and systemic understanding of the human being, as proposed by the Biopsychosocial Model. In addition, we observe that it does not consider the phenomenon of occupation as an aspect to consider in its understanding of human beings, and its idea of health and disease. Thus, the dialogue developed between the two considerations leads us to conclude that due to radical ontological differences, they contradict each other. In this way, an Occupational Therapy that maintains the center of its identity from an existential idea of an occupational human being is not relevant under the principles of the Biopsychosocial Model.
