Open-access Pharmaceutical care in Primary Health Care: a scoping review

Abstract

Introduction:  Pharmaceutical care actions in Primary Health Care (PHC) bring benefits to users and are encouraged through normative instruments. Despite this, the Brazilian PHC scenario is incipient.

Objective:  To analyze the scientific evidence on pharmaceutical care in PHC in the light of its implementation in Brazil, through a literature scoping review.

Method:  Original articles and literature reviews published from March 2011 to March 2021 in Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Web of Science, Scopus, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) databases were identified. The summarization and analysis of the findings started from the extraction and tabulation of author information, year of publication, country of origin, type of action in pharmaceutical care, and target population or condition.

Results:  Ninety-one articles were included. The studies portrayed several pharmaceutical care actions, focusing on pharmacotherapeutic follow-up and its multiple benefits for users. The tools used to conduct the actions were developed in a few studies.

Conclusion:  The limited scope of activities addressed in the literature points to the need to produce evidence that guides the practice of pharmaceutical care in PHC.
