Open-access The influence of Brazilian samba in the fatigue perception of individuals with Parkinson's disease

Abstract

Introduction:  New dance interventions applied to Parkinson's disease rehabilitation offer various benefits in the disease's motor symptoms.

Objective:  To analyze the influence of Brazilian samba on the sensation of fatigue in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

Methods:  Participants were 47 subjects, mean age 68±9.3 years, 24 of the control group (GC) and 23 of the experimental group (SG). The CG was formed by those who did not participate in the intervention, and the EG by individuals who participated in the dance protocol. Data collection was divided into two pre- and post-intervention moments, with a questionnaire composed of: General information; Mini-Mental State Examination; Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS); Quality of life (PDQ-39); Fatigue (FSS-BR); Perceived Changes.

Results:  The results show that, after 12 weeks, the SG presented an improvement in the FSS-BR scores, as the SG showed a significant improvement in the total UPDRS as well as in the comparison between the two groups in the post-intervention period. Regarding the PDQ-39 scores, after the intervention there was a significant change in the total values only in the EG.

Conclusion:  It is concluded that the Brazilian samba seems to influence the fatigue sensation of individuals with PD, as well as the values of UPDRS and PDQ-39.
