A STATE OF KNOWLEDGE ON ALGEBRA IN THE UNITED STATES’ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

In 1905, a study on the reform of the American elementary education is published in the journal Educational Review, pointing out the need for an algebra at the elementary school. A historical state of knowledge about this theme in the Educational Review was made, based in the perspective of digital humanities, using the IRaMuTeQ. Algebra was the focus in the search on the journal, from the selection and analysis of the texts with the software. A movement in favor of teaching based on equations and linear systems, applied to complex problems of arithmetic, was observed.
