In this paper gender is discussed as a social construction which is established by a given culture in relation to men and women. Gender is characterised as a relational construction with reference not only to the other sex but also to categories such as race, age, social class and motor skills. The paper also analyses: (i) boys' and girls' anticipated bodily expectations and how they manifest in school culture; (ii) how this concept of sport can be re-defined by applying this notion of gender to contents in Physical Education; (iii) possibilities for teachers' interventions in the construction of relationships between boys and girls.
