This paper focuses on the work developed at school Mauro Faccio Gonçalves - "Zacaria" - since 1996. It also proposes to reflect on fundamental theoretical issues to build public schools committed to serious teaching and learning for children and teenagers living in the São Paulo's outskirts. The report and analysis deals with four axes around which the dynamics of school takes place: the process of teaching and learning, school projects, the importance of management in the construction of a learning environment, teacher training.
