Lecture in the Department of Education and Pedagogical Standards of the State of São Paulo (cenp/sp) in 1985 at the height of a campaign for inclusion of the discipline Sociology in the Brazilian curriculum. This is a historical record of a teacher's participation in this debate. In this text the author stresses the important role of Sociology in school, allowing students to question and think up new possibilities of living in society.
