The article focuses on disclosures made by black women in an attempt to establish dimensions of their self construction as citizens in a society that discriminates against the gender and race/ethnic group to which they belong. Militant women belonging to the Black Movement in the southern states of the country were queried on the meaning of being women and black. The responses highlight that self representation as black women implies to permanently confront discriminatory attitudes and postures. In addition, it requires combativeness, introspection, positive self image, as well as a critical stance towards social relations while putting forward proposals for their transformation. The study points out that in search of construing their presence in society, these women struggle to overcome the invisibility imposed on the descendants of Africans. The women also struggle to have the needs of this group met by social policies that would address the problems that afflict it and would eliminate the oppressions that are inflicted upon it, fighting in this manner, for justice for all those who are marginalized by society. The article concludes with the assertion that the most genuine sources of knowledge concerning the black women are themselves, indicating the need for studies that address this theme, to have at center, the former's points of view as women and blacks.
  • Memorial: Fazendo-me professora

This account presents the core of my memorial presented during my pre-viva examination for the Ph. D. With its publication, I aim at reflecting, together with the reader, upon determinant moments of my becoming a teacher. My memories and reflections reconstruct this trajectory, from my first school years up to the pre-viva. I present facts that contributed to my profile as a teacher, in my own life history althougs they cannot reflect all its complexity. I follow this track of sucesses avoiding dealing with ill sucesses, errors and consequent sufferings in an attempt to overcome the contradictions present in moments of decision making.

An intricate net of factors assigns adolescent pregnancy a very high degree of risk for both mother and child, mainly for those from lower income classes. Serious consequences of premature pregnancy are felt in morbidity/mortality rates among mothers and babies as much as in the economic, educational and social outcomes. Educational action is one manner of facing the problem. Nonetheless, educational actions which emphasize solely the biological approach to family planning have proved uneffective as we consider statistics relative to the reproductive health of girls. In order to have education bringing about effective contribution to the decrease of this particular type of pregnancy, all dimensons of the problem need to be taken into consideration, in special the social-cultural dimension, which establishes the determinants of undesired pregnancies. To approach this latter dimension mainly, from an educational perspective means to open room, inside and outside schools, for the debate about women's identity within a process that encompasses their thoroughness as human beings.

What is known about female reading in the second half of the nineteenth century? A cartography of readings makes sense only if related to the community of male and female readers here analysed, using as data newspapers and literary works. A net of social interdependencies is established between female readers, writers and editors of the nineteenth century, having as theoretical-methodological references authors such as Roger Chartier, Michel de Certeau e Norbert Elias. The evidences, make clear that representating the book as the woman companion is always present in the novels analysed; the designation of readings that preconize moral customs and the reading of prohibited novels reveal not only female readings practices but also the strategies used in the search for a reading "space".
  • Contos de Perrault, imagens de mulheres

    Abramowicz, Anete

The paper discusses the process of appropriation of popular oral stories from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, by Perrault. It analyses the images of women acclaimed and celebrated in the author's fairy tales, built and inscribed within a given context and which propose certain values. The paper also analyses the possibility of reconstructing a socio-cultural history of folk-tales. It suggests an interdisciplinary approach to fairy tales in which cultural history and the history of the material forms would indissolubly mix.
