THE ZAPATISTA MOVEMENT AND THE INDIGENIZATION OF POPULAR EDUCATION

Zapatismo promotes an autonomous way of life that has education as a central pillar. We try to think of Zapatista education as an indigenization of popular education that potentializes its decolonization. To this end, we carried out an overview of the “refoundation of popular education,” highlighting the ruptures and continuities of intersectional and Freirean perspectives, to then discuss Zapatista education based on ethnographic work. Bringing education and anthropology closer together, we highlight “equivocal” translations produced by Zapatists on issues dear to popular education, such as autonomy, feminism, and awareness. There is a displacement of humanism in favor of a network of relationships with different non-human beings and the protagonism of women, which starts from the multiplicity. Finally, we seek to qualify the Zapatist indigenization not as a return to a lost past, but as an affirmation of the contemporaneity of peoples based on the coexistence of temporalities and knowledge, with their own relationship with the Earth.
