OSTENSIVE POLICING AND INEQUALITIES IN SAO PAULO AND MINAS GERAIS

This article analyzes relations between ostensible policing model and selectivity of police action based on attributes of criminal suspects in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Data collection and analysis taken different procedures. Figures on arrests and police killings were extracted from official police records. Qualitative data were obtained through interviews with military police graduated officers of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The results indicate unequal treatment of white and black publics, having as evidence the calculations of odds ratio of being arrested or being a fatal victim of police occurrence. The findings indicate that the link between policing and racism is deepened by changes in the role of military policing in crime control strategies.
