Open-access Translation and validation of the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale - Form B*

ABSTRACT

Objective:  To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale - Form B into Brazilian Portuguese and to assess its content validity and internal consistency.

Method:  A methodological study developed in online format during 2021 and 2022 with participation of experts in the topic of “death” and sworn translators from Brazil. It involved the following stages: Translation; Synthesis; Back-translation; Review by an experts’ committee; Pre-test; and Final version.

Results:  After the translation process, internal consistency was verified using Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient, which reached 0.81. The overall Content Validity Index was 88.27, higher than the minimum required for acceptability.

Conclusion:  The Brazilian version of the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale - Form B Scale presented sufficient metrics to be applied in Brazil. Use of the scale will contribute to increasing visibility regarding the issue of death and assistance to dying patients.
