After analyzing approximately 8,000 studies, 51 met the inclusion criteria. They were analyzed and grouped into 7 primary categories: municipal governments, local governments broadly, state governments, educational institutions, the third sector, open data, and other approaches. The identified documents can contribute to promoting and structure of accountability within organizations. The theoretical contribution consists of a synthesis of the theme and outlining future research directions to advance the field.
