A critique of philosophical reductionism in Chemistry regarding Quantum Mechanics as a fundamental element for teacher education

Abstract:

Philosophy of science is a particularly important field of knowledge for chemistry teaching. It can shed a new light on the concepts used in the classroom, at the same time as it may lead the teacher to investigate the epistemology of science. In this paper, we demonstrate how the philosophical question of reductionism can be addressed in Chemistry teaching. Reductionism should be discussed in the classroom by teachers and students, based on the argumentative assumptions shown in this study, and it is essential that this topic be brought to the Chemistry Degree curricula..
