Identities in border territories: The cases of Ceuta and Gibraltar on the frontier between Africa and Europe

Abstract:

The article discusses the relationship between identity and frontier in the field of border studies and analyses the particularity of the identifications of the local populations of the territories of Ceuta and Gibraltar, located between Africa and Europe and claimed respectively by Morocco and Spain. This reflection was systematized through the analysis of local newspaper reports, bibliographical research and field observations in the cities of Ceuta and Gibraltar and in the boundaries with the municipalities of Fnideq (Morocco) and La Línea de Concepción (Spain).
