Selfie and datafication of everyday life: an ethnographic approach to material-discursive practices and policies

Abstract:

Taking as a starting point the conversational possibilities linked to the practice of selfie, this article aims to investigate the material-discursive practices and policies developed through the daily production and sharing of digital self-portraits. Based on ethnographic research carried out in the city of Salvador, BA, Brazil, it discusses the moments in which the political is differently requested in each specific practice and situation, and how conversations differ in each relationship, digital environment, and material arrangement. Based on the experiences and accounts presented, it is argued for an understanding of the practice of selfie also as a material-discursive practice, in which the digital materialities that compose it act in a way to transform experiences and create conversational possibilities in an environment of daily datafication.
