Topography of risk: literary eroticism in contemporary Brazil

The obscene literature produced in the country over the last quarter century has mobilized a repertoire of fantasies peculiar to the urban sensibility of contemporary Brazil. It consists of gamut of images whose defining characteristic is the clash between the elevated forms and lower rungs of national culture, finely attuned to the most pressing dilemmas of the day. Undertaken almost exclusively by homosexuals and women, this type of writing suggests an eroticism on the edge, as if putting one's life at risk had become the primordial condition of desire. This text will explore the affinities among the thematic and formal particularities of this repertoire.
