Poverty and Daring in Gilka Machado: a Poetry of Body, Soul and Nature.

Abstract

Despite the limited analysis of her work, either in her time or our own, the works of Brazil’s first major erotic poet, Gilka Machado (1893-1980), are still not as recognized and studied as they should be. This article focuses on aspects of an impoverished life, which reveals important issues about corporeality. By examining certain passages that generally describe environments, we can better glimpse her sensibility of sacrifice and specify the development of a determined literary motif: wealth in poverty.
