O ano de 2009 marcou o quadragésimo aniversário de um texto pioneiro que apareceu na revista inglesa Nature e que pressagiava o advento de procedimentos bem sucedidos de Fertilização in Vitro e de muito mais. Esse foi o tema de uma conferência reunida sob o título "Embriões Humanos in Vitro: reflexões interdisciplinares sobre as primeiras quatro décadas". Meu trabalho era simplesmente chamado de "A Visão da Antropologia Social", sua "obra" básica está na bibliografia anexa. Ele se refere a desenvolvimentos no mundo de fala inglesa, mas espero que seja de interesse mais amplo.

The year 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of a ground-breaking paper that appeared in the UK journal Nature that presaged the advent of successful IVF procedures, and much else. This was the subject of a conference held under the title "In vitro human embryos: Interdisciplinary reflections on the first four decades". My paper was simply called "The view from social anthropology", the basic "work" of the paper being in the accompanying bibliography. It concerns developments in the English-speaking world, but hopefully is of wider interest.

Proponho neste ensaio que o conceito de masculinidade pioneiramente desenvolvido em Naven, de Gregory Bateson, sua monografia de 1936 a respeito do ritual e da sociedade entre os Iatmul, povo da Nova Guiné, foi o momento original da posição construtivista que se tornou predominante, não apenas nos estudos sobre masculinidade na Melanésia em particular, mas também nos estudos sobre masculinidade em geral. Minha proposta, no entanto, faz ainda uma outra afirmação definitiva: a visão antecipada de gênero de Bateson não atingiu a maturidade teórica nos estudos sobre a masculinidade, seja nos estudos da área, seja definidos de maneira mais ampla, até 50 anos depois, quando recebeu um novo tratamento por Marilyn Strathern em The Gender of the Gift (1988).

In this essay, I argue that the concept of masculinity that was first developed in Bateson's Naven, his 1936 monograph about ritual and society among the Iatmul, a New Guinea people, was an originary moment for the constructivist position that has come to hold sway, not only over masculinity studies in Melanesia in specific, but over masculinity studies in general. My thesis, however, advances a more definite claim: Bateson's prescient view of gender did not come to theoretical maturity in masculinity studies, either areally, or more broadly defined, for another 50 years, when it was given new articulation by Marilyn Strathern in The Gender of the Gift (1988).

Este artigo analisa os mecanismos de produção de sentido da infertilidade e dos novos modos de produção da vida, mediante o uso de tecnologias reprodutivas conceptivas. Destacam-se os pressupostos normativos de maternidade e/ou reprodução, assim como a relação do surgimento e configuração deste campo como um empreendimento contemporâneo de mercantilização e consumo de biotecnologias. O progresso científico, neste caso, é incorporado na figura do tecno-embrião, ligado à fetichização do gene e à afirmação de valores tradicionais associados à família consangüínea.

This article analyzes the mechanisms of the production of the sense of infertility and of the new modes of production of life through the use of conceptive reproductive technologies. The normative underpinnings of maternity and/or reproduction are highlighted, as well as the emergence and taking shape of this field as a contemporary drive toward the mercantilization and consumption of biotechnology. Scientific progress, in this case, is incorporated into the figure of the techno-embryo, linked to the fetishization of the gene and the assertion of traditional values associated with consanguineous families.

Os estudos do filósofo inglês J. L. Austin têm controversas interpretações e apropriações, apontando a complexidade de seu texto e sua contribuição sempre produtiva. Um conjunto importante dessas interpretações são aquelas dos estudos sobre o corpo: elas discutem o corpo como ato de fala ou os processos corporais de subjetivação como performativos. Meu interesse é aproximar e diferenciar três marcos teóricos dessas abordagens do corpo e discutir suas conseqüências teóricas para os estudos da linguagem, especialmente nos estudos de identidades.

The English philosopher J. L. Austin's studies have contentious interpretations and appropriations, pointing out to the complexity of his texts and his always fertile contributions. One important set of these interpretations are body studies: these discuss the body as speech acts or the subjectivizing bodily process as performative. My interest is to approximate and to contrast three theoretical signs of those body interpretations and to discuss their theoretical consequences to language studies, in particular to the identity studies.

A partir de uma pesquisa mais ampla sobre as inflexões de gênero no campo intelectual e no teatro brasileiro, entre 1940 e 1968, o artigo discute as relações entre estética e gênero e suas implicações nas carreiras das atrizes Cacilda Becker, Maria Della Costa, Tônia Carrero e Cleyde Yáconis. Segundo testemunho dos que a viram representar, Cacilda não foi prejudicada por seus atributos físicos menos favoráveis. A hipótese é de que isso se deve às artimanhas das convenções teatrais, que permitem burlar constrangimentos físicos, sociais e de gênero. Fartamente presente na mídia para retratar, realçar ou diminuir as mulheres sob seu foco, a beleza raramente aparece como dimensão relevante na análise das trajetórias femininas. Daí o interesse em discutir essa questão através de sua refração no processo de construção social das carreiras artísticas.

Drawing from a broader research on gender inflections in the Brazilian intellectual field and in Brazilian drama, between 1940 and 1968, the article discusses the relations between aesthetics and gender, and their implications on the careers of actresses Cacilda Becker, Maria Della Costa, Tônia Carrero and Cleyde Yáconis. According to testimony of those who saw her perform on stage, Cacilda was never hampered by her less favorable physical attributes. The hypothesis is that this is due to the cunning tricks of the conventions of dramatic arts that allow the dodging of social, gender and physical constraints. Widely evoked by the media to portrait, underline or diminish women under its focus, beauty rarely features as a relevant dimension in the analysis of female trajectories. Hence the interest in discussing the subject through its refraction on the process of social construction of artistic careers.

Este artigo analisa um grupo de pré-adolescentes pobres do interior mineiro que frequentaram um Curso de Modelo. Face ao apelo erótico que envolve, na mídia, a imagem dessa profissão, parece paradoxal que os pais - que associam esta carreira à prostituição - matriculem as filhas em tal curso, em aparente conflito com sua moral familiar e religiosa. O curso permite a aquisição de habilidades e o domínio de códigos que não pertencem a sua condição de classe. Além disso, participar do curso e desfilar em ambientes frequentados pela elite se tornam estratégias de apresentar a filha à sociedade, ampliando o capital social familiar.

This paper analyses a group of poor pre-adolescents in a modeling course in Minas Gerais. Facing the erotic image of the profession, presented by the media, it seems paradoxical that the parents - who associate this career with prostitution - register the daughters in such a course, in apparent conflict with the family's religious morals. The course allows the acquisition of abilities and codes which do not belong to the family' class condition. However, to participate in it and to model in events attended by the elite become a strategy to present the daughters to the society, enlarging the family's social capital.

En este trabajo analizo un corpus de fotografías personales de un hombre en la década de 1940 en Argentina, rastreando los modos en que lo visual y la fotografía operan como instancias de construcción de subjetividades generizadas. También recorro algunos estereotipos masculinos de la época y sus posibles vínculos con las visualizaciones masculinas en las fotografías.

In this paper I examine a set of personal photographs belonging to a man in 1940. My aim is to demonstrate the ways in which the visual and the photographic device produce gendered subjectivities. I also present some masculine stereotypes from that period and analyze the ways in which they are represented in the photographs of masculine visualities.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a possibilidade de uma revista, destinada ao público feminino, servir como "lugar de memória" (Pierre Nora). Para tanto, formou-se um grupo com três leitoras da revista Capricho (1950 a 1960), onde elas puderam folhear exemplares da revista da época citada. Esse método proporcionou vislumbrar uma forma de acesso, através das revistas, memórias e narrativas, a aspectos relacionados à história das mulheres e das relações de gênero. Nessa experiência, a publicidade ficou evidenciada como importante "lugar de memória", possibilitando reflexões acerca da participação das propagandas na constituição das subjetividades das mulheres e dos homens de uma geração. As diversas lembranças trazidas pelas leitoras evidenciaram a diversidade de possibilidades na constituição das subjetividades, mesmo que em uma mesma época.

This paper aims to present the possibility of a magazine, for the female public, serving as a "place of memory" (Pierre Nora). In order to do this, a group was formed with three female readers of the magazine Capricho (1950 to 1960), where they could browse magazine copies of the mentioned time. This method provided a glimpse of an access, through the journals, memoirs and narratives, to the aspects related to the history of women and of gender relations. Through this experience advertising was shown as an important "place of memory", enabling reflection on the participation of advertisements in the constitution of subjectivities of women and men of a generation. The memories brought by several readers pointed to the diversity of possibilities in the constitution of subjectivities, even within the same season.

Ao discutir os relatos de professoras e observar suas ações frente às meninas e aos meninos, este artigo trata das relações de gênero e poder presentes nos processos de socialização de crianças pequenas e analisa as estratégias voltadas para a normalização e o controle das expressões corporais de meninas e meninos. Ao buscar compreender como ocorria a educação de meninos e meninas que transgrediam as fronteiras do que lhes era imposto, verificamos como as características aparentemente naturalizadas e direcionadas à masculinidade e à feminilidade são resultantes de muitos esforços para deixar marcas distintas no corpo, no comportamento e nas habilidades dessas crianças.

Based on interviews with teachers and on the observation of their work with girls and boys, this article deals with the gender and power relationships in the process of early childhood socialization and analyzes the strategies that are used to promote the normalization and control of body expressions o girls and boys. In the process of trying to understand how was developed the education of boys and girls who transgressed the frontiers which were imposed on them, we observed how the apparently naturalized characteristics of masculinity and of femininity are the result of many efforts to mark differently the body, the behavior and the skills of these children.

A figura do hermafrodita ou andrógino foi fundamental para todo o discurso médico-moral-espiritual sobre sexo e gênero em nossa cultura, desde a Antiguidade até o século XVIII. Com a mudança epistemológica que ocorre a partir do século XVI, o antigo hermafrodita, associado ao mundo mágico e religioso, perde seu lugar nas classificações modernas. A partir do século XIX nasce uma nova entidade conceitual no Ocidente: o pseudo-hermafrodita da medicina, não mais "maravilha" da natureza, mas um erro desta; filho do racionalismo iluminista e do positivismo, vindo a tornar-se o pai - e mãe - das futuras identidades transgêneras.

The image of the hermaphrodite or androgyne was essential for all medical-moral-spiritual discourses about sex and gender in our culture, from Antiquity until the eighteenth century. With the epistemological change that has happened since the sixteenth century, the old hermaphrodite, associated with the magical and religious world, has lost his/her place in modern classifications. From the nineteenth century on, a new conceptual entity in the West takes place: the pseudo-hermaphrodite from medicine, not the wonder of nature anymore, but its error; a product of the illuminist rationalism and positivism, gradually becoming the father and mother of future transgender identities.

Neste artigo, discutimos as potencialidades teórico-metodológicas dos estudos de gênero na perspectiva da História Comparada. A partir da análise de enunciações dos mitos de Pandora e Eva, focalizamos uma problemática do gênero associada à tematização do corpo e do casamento na Atenas Clássica (apropriações das narrativas do mito de Pandora por Hesíodo) e no Reino de Portugal em fins do medievo, analisando como a diferença é significada, questionada e legitimada nestes dois contextos históricos distintos.

In this article, we discuss theoretical and methodological potentials of gender studies in Comparative History. By analyzing enunciations of Pandora's (Hesiod's Theogony and Works and Days) and Eva's (version of the medieval Portuguese Bible) myths, we focus on gender issues associated to body and marriage in ancient Greece (classical Athens) and in the kingdom of Portugal at the end of Middle Ages. Our interest lies on how difference is signified, questioned and legitimated in relation to these two distinct historical contexts.

Neste trabalho propomos questionar como são construídos e validados os discursos acerca de sexualidade, gênero e identidade sexual, a partir da história de vida de três irmãos homossexuais nascidos no interior do nordeste brasileiro. Ainda jovens, migraram para a cidade de Diadema - São Paulo, onde se tornaram, no decorrer de alguns anos, travestis e profissionais do sexo. A percepção da homossexualidade foi relatada como parte da infância, e sentida como uma força natural. Já, as transformações realizadas sobre o corpo decorrentes da travestilidade, a decisão pela prostituição, a orientação sexual (por homem ou por mulher), e a construção de uma identidade sexual (gay ou travesti), apareceram como instâncias dissociadas entre si e relacionadas à busca da valorização pessoal e social diante do estigma atribuído ao gay afeminado, pobre e migrante. A religiosidade afro-brasileira e a gramática yorubá assumiram relevância para a constituição desta possibilidade identitária.

In this work we propose to question how the speeches on sexuality, gender and sexual identity are built and validated, emerging from the life story of three homosexual brothers who were born in the inland areas of the Brazilian northeast. When they were still young, they migrated to Diadema, in São Paulo, where in the course of time, they became transvestites and sex professionals. The perception of homosexuality was reported as part of childhood and sensed as a natural force. Now, the modifications made in the body due to "travestilidade", the decision on prostitution, the sex orientation (to men or to women) and the building of a sexual identity (gay or transvestite), came to view as fields dissociated from each other and related to the search of individual and social valorization before the stigma attached to the effeminate, poor and migrant gay. The Afro-Brazilian religiosity and the Yoruba grammar assumed relevance to the constitution of this possibility of identity.
