Abstract This article explores the fictional feature film "Marcados para viver" (1976), by Brazilian filmmaker Maria do Rosário Nascimento e Silva (1949-2010). This film is innovative, among other reasons, for starring a character whose sexual and gender identity is not fixed in the male/female binary logic. It is based on the perspective of Allison Butler, who considers women’s cinema as "minor cinema", in which the condition of marginal, peripheral or minority allows the creative power to invent other spaces, consciousness and sensitivity. It is further complemented by Patricia White's work on "Lesbian Minor Cinema". The term "women's cinema", widely used in the 1970s, including in Brazil, to refer to films made by women, constitutes an eminently political designation, in feminist theory, to demarcate the field and certain subjects, not configuring any essentialist defense of the category "women". The article analyzes the first Brazilian fictional film made by a woman to bring a lesbian character to the screen, highlighting its reception in the Brazilian press and censorship at the time of its release.

    Alexandre Sobrinho, Gilberto

    Resumo em Português:

Resumo Análise do documentário Ôrí (direção Raquel Gerber, 1989).

Abstract Analysis of the documentary Ôrí (Raquel Gerber, 1989). Developed over 11 years, between 1977 and 1988, the film takes the point of view of the black intellectual and militant Beatriz Nascimento, an inaugural presence within the scope of Brazilian documentary, which narrates from her ideas and intertwines these with events related to the black social movements in Brazil. The study contextualizes the making of the film and approaches it from two directions: through the meanings of Beatriz Nascimento's voice and her conceptual performance, centred on the ideas of transmigration and quilombo; and from the notion of cartographic montage, which compresses the long duration of the experience of making the film and gives a strong feeling of the relationship between the notion of place and blackness.
  • Luz(es) del Fuego: rebeldia e feminismos Dossiê Imaginações Rebeldes:disputas E Derivações Da Artepensamento Feminista

    Bessa, Karla

Abstract The article presents a reading of the film Luz Del Fuego (1982), by David Neves, taking a critical feminist approach, which links historical and film analysis. It discusses the historicity of Luz Del Fuego's transgressive practices (both person and character) from distinct points of view produced about her and by her own book. The article addresses the meanings of the gesture of stripping and asks the limits of the recognition of Luz as a feminist. Finally, it analyzes the radical experience that marked her struggle for freedom of the body and pleasure as a mode of rebellious subjectivation, which dynamized anti-colonial gender technologies in the tropics.

Abstract In this article I propose to examine the use of first-person testimonies and their re-enactments in Jogo de Cena (Eduardo Coutinho, 2007) and The Arbor (Clio Barnard, 2010). Through a careful comparison between these two films, I will argue that re-enactment complicates the employment of first person testimonies, producing duplicity and a feeling of estrangement in the viewer. Rather than indicating the ambiguous distinction between reality and fiction, re-enactment presupposes instead the staging of a scene of co-appearance.
  • Cultura cinematográfica e identidades queer no Brasil contemporâneo Dossiê Imaginações Rebeldes:disputas E Derivações Da Artepensamento Feminista

    Dennison, Stephanie

Abstract This article seeks to reflect upon the interaction between film culture and both the LGBTQIA+ communities and society at large in the twenty-first century, an interaction (and film production) that has increased exponentially during the period under examination, in large measure as a result of the diversity agenda, along with broader access to film funding. After providing a context to queer filmmaking in Brazil and to exhibition in the 21st century, the article analyses three key films from the last 6 years: Praia do Futuro (Future Beach, Karim Ainouz, 2014), Mãe só há uma (Don’t Call Me Son, Anna Muylaert, 2016) and Bixa Travesty (Tranny Fag, Kiko Goifman and Claudia Priscilla, 2018).
  • Por que não existiram grandes cineastas mulheres no Brasil?* Dossiê Imaginações Rebeldes:disputas E Derivações Da Artepensamento Feminista

    Holanda, Karla

Abstract Inspired by the essay “Why have there been no great female artists?”, this article considers some current issues found in discussions raised in the text by Linda Nochlin, first published in 1971, adapting the dialogue to the Brazilian cinema context until the 1970s, when great male Brazilian filmmakers had already been canonized in cinema history. Why have there no women in this canon of Brazilian cinema? What constitutes a great filmmaker? This study examines these questions by exploring the affirmation implied by the question in the title.
  • Vulnerabilidad y deseo.

Abstract In the current context of women’s bodies being vulnerated in Latin America, we analize the strategies proposed by Angelica Liddell in her work The House of Strength (2009). Through a transit that goes from her personal experiences to the murders of women in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico —taken as a site of origin and limit of that violence—, Liddell shapes a resistance based on the surfaces and the superficial quality of anecdotes, dialogues, news, bodies and images that are part of the work. We confront the aesthetic analysis with the concepts of surface and desire in G. Deleuze, C. Colebrook and E. Grosz.
  • Musa Michelle Mattiuzzi:perambulações radicais, gestos de terror e fugitividade em carne Dossiê Imaginações Rebeldes:disputas E Derivações Da Artepensamento Feminista

    Lopes, Fabiana

Abstract In this essay, I provide a brief overview of Musa Michelle Mattiuzzi’s artistic output (works created between 2012 and 2018), focusing on some of her performances, ephemeral live actions, and writings. At the same time, I read Mattiuzzi’s practice in dialogue with a few other black woman artists from Brazil, thus offering one provisional and short mapping of the current output from black Brazilian artists. Through this mapping, I attempt to provide an expanded understanding of contemporary artistic production in Brazil and offer some insights on particular interventions to the field that have been made by black Brazilian artists. I also argue that, through what I am naming radical wanderings, Mattiuzzi stretches and deepens the tension created by her body and presence (and by art) in the public sphere, thus making a radical expansion on the discussion proposed by some of her contemporaries about black womanhood in Brazil. Moreover, I argue that Mattiuzzi’s aesthetic procedures (re)present a theoretical feminist intervention.

Abstract This article discusses the creative street activities of the feminist group Mujeres Creando , from Bolivia, in order to approach the art of feminist performance. With reference to the problematisation of language as developed by various feminist theorists, the article articulates the notion of ‘inhabiting the contradictory' to think about the presence of women in this artistic language. The text is divided into three parts. First, it focuses on the refusal of Mujeres Creando to define their expressive street activities as performance art and it questions their artistic participation in some art galleries. Secondly it reflects on the female body in performative action and the dilemma that inscribes it simultaneously in the space of protest and desire. Thirdly, it discusses the controversies surrounding the work “Espaço para Abortar” presented by the group at the 31st Bienal de Arte in São Paulo.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine how film productions by actor and director Sady Baby constructed representations about heterosexual men, women, homosexual men and transvestites. The central argument is that, although the appeal to the bizarre and the grotesque represented resistance to the domestication and normalization of bodies, this director’s movies reproduced disparaging values towards women, homosexual men and transvestites, while reiterating standards of dominant virility of heterosexual male characters.

    Lapera, Pedro Vinicius Asterito

Abstract This article discusses the relation between cinematographic consumption and the presence of women in the urban space of Rio de Janeiro in the early twentieth century. In an extremely hierarchical environment, we verify the ways in which the act of going to the movies was inserted in the field of possibilities for the circulation of women in urban space. We analyzed the strategies of male domination found in policies to establish order and support the family during the “First Republic”, as well as the tactics adopted by women to resist these strategies and demonstrate dissatisfaction with the roles attributed to genders in the period.

Abstract The objective of this article is to present data from a recent study about processes that legitimize young artists, which reveal the profile of artists selected for artistic events that contribute to the construction and legitimation of careers in the field of art. The study begins with the question: do women artists currently face the same forms of exclusion as in the past, when they experienced processes that left their work invisible in the field of art? Data are presented concerning the legitimation of young female artists by six public call for projects and one award process in Brazil.

Salinas Meruane, Paulina Irene; Romaní Chocce, Gianni

Abstract While the public sector and extractive industries have implemented measures to increase the participation of women in mining, higher education is at the margin of these initiatives. Through a focus group and interviews, we find that female students are not able to counter the machismo of their professors or of their fellow students. Therefore, professional training must strive to strengthen self-esteem, character, assertiveness, and leadership in women, while also working to reverse gender biases present in higher education, in order to build bridges that can lead to a more inclusive, sustainable and virtuous industry by 2035.

Abstract This article shows how The House of Memory Museum of Medellin has included gender perspective in its work, by examining the project “Gender, Memory and Depatriarchalization”, implemented by the institution in 2014 and 2015. The project began from a participative action research proposal, which was innovative for exploring how some masculine gender configurations were linked to violent actions and the Colombian armed conflict. The purpose of this article is to analyze how the project was formulated and implemented, highlighting the reading of the category "gender" made by the museum's staff, and how the bonding of men as sexed beings in the disarticulation of the Colombian armed conflict was considered as a museological project.
