Physiological and health quality of melon (Cucumis melo) seeds

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of different vigour tests in the identification of vigour levels and health quality of melon (Cucumis melo L.) seeds. Four seed lots of Gaúcho and Carvalho cultivars were evaluated. Seeds were submitted to the first germination counting, field emergence, controlled deterioration and aging, cold vigour and health tests. Results indicated that controlled deterioration and accelerated aging tests presented enough sensibility for evaluating the physiological potential of melon seeds. Tests of seedling evaluation did not show enough sensibility to identify hiht quality seed lots. Aspergillus ssp. and Fusarium oxysporum were detected associated with seeds.
